I carefully layed in black vinyl electrical tape. You can not tell that it is in strips (not solid) unless you put your nose to the grille.

What you REALLY want to use is a high-performance vinyl, with high-strength adhesive.
Go to a sign shop. Ask for some scraps of black, or matte black gerber/3m premium-grage vinyl.
Black duct-tape is for patching camaros and firebirds only.
Never use duct-tape on a Bimmer, maybe a beemer, like if your krauser bag latch is broken.

It has a texture to it that makes it look like fine square grills under the grills. And it is the perfect width.
