I've recently inherited a 73 CSi and have spent some time overhauling it mechanically - including the brakes. All 4 corners were rebuilt and the master cylinder and the boosters redone - including replacing one of the latter as the previous owner had replaced one booster with one from another BM model.

Now I'm getting strange behaviour under braking that I'm hoping one of you afficiandos can throw some light on.

Stationary the pedal is quite firm, but releasing and pumping the pedal once brings it right up to the point that there is only a quarter inch of travel. At this point it appears to be binding and holding the pads on.

If I'm driving I can replicate the above and under braking the car pulls either left or right - so strongly that it feels almost as if a strut is moving. After releasing the pedal the car pulls strongly in that direction for several minutes until a couple of miles without brakes and the effect disappears and the car tracks true

At first I thought that there was brake fluid being trapped somewhere and not bleeding out properly but what is puzzling is that there is no consistency in the cars behaviour - it can pull either right or left and there appears to be no conditions governing which way it will go.

Is there an apportioning mechanism on the system for the split between the boosters and could this be having an effect? If so can anyone suggest why the effect would be random.

Any help greatfully appreciated.

The work on the car was done in Melbourne Australia by a mechanic who spent most of his lie in racing teams and whose own car is a 635 CSi. Seemed like a good idea at the time but he's at a loss. Anyone out there with suggestions for a good mechanic in this neck of the woods?

Thank you.

Tony, I cannot directly comment - Gretch and Bill seem to have their fingers on the pulse here. If you have any further problems , there is a chap whom I bought my '71 2800cs from down there in Victoria. He's actually located at Glenrowan and is a BMW mechanic who specialises in these old coupes. Also I have a spreadsheet of around 15 coupe owners in Melbourne. Email me if you want the details for one or both.

Good Luck.
