I always thought (and have often seen) chrome fender and hood grilles on early E9s (up to '73, VIN 22xxxxx). Now, based on information from Walloth & Nesch, the restoration shop tells me that my '72 CSi should have black grilles as it has a light exterior color (polaris). Chrome grilles were apparently only fitted to dark colored cars.

What's the final word on this?

I have an original BMW sales catlogue for the E9 coupes, and this shows both dark and light colored cars, all with chrom top and side grilles. NB all the featured cars are 2800cs.
