When I moved back from the UK to NZ I looked at shipping my Alfa back. Cheapest quote was 800 UKPounds. You can't really get further around the globe than that, (unless maybe you went from England to Ireland the *wrong way* around the world! ;-)

As for putting cars in containers I had friends who worked for a company in LA that specialised in doing exactly that. They used to build this structure that would get three cars into one large container. One on the ground in the middle and one either end on an angle. Last one I saw had a mint 66 mustang in it, and I've often thought about whether the structure would hold if the container came down with a heavy bump. Anyway I guess it must have been strong as they were shipping a heap of cars all over the world...

Humm...

I once shipped a MG to Norway... from Seattle. Went to Japan first then up from there. Cost? $500. AU would be the same price ($500 delivery anywhere worldwide).

This was not in a container but standard auto delivery via auto transport ship..... container shipping would be $1500+ or more. It did however arrive without so much as a scratch on it... the buyer was pleased. Ditto on when I imported two different BMW's from europe. No damage to either, $500 each ocean transport.

As for shipping a car to AU to be restored.... I hope you plan on taking many vacations there over the course of the restoration to check up on the work. Otherwise you'll be taking a chance.... Picts online are nice... seeing the work in person is worth much more. I wouldn't spend the $$ for a full blown restoration otherwise.... having a personal relationship with your restorer is very important, besides the fact that you will learn how your car was restored you'll also learn some tips on how to do it yourself! Plus see all the other cool cars in the shop too....

When I had my concours Healey 100M done by my local Panelbeater (he came from AU to the US cost, $18K for bodywork alone..no bondo in that one!). At any one time he had 2-3 Gullwings/AC acecca/Lagondas/Porsche 356 cab, several nice early Alfas and several custom street rod projects going on at once.... where else would you see such a site?
