Unless you're an expert with a torch and grinder, a rusty $5,500 coupe is going to cost a lot more than that. You can easily spend another 15 grand (and lots more) or every weekend for the next five years to turn that car into "just a driver". Parts are a little scarce, but the Karmann coupe unibody experiment in multi-layered sheetmetal is truly brutal on your time or your checkbook. For 8-10 grand you can likely find a minimal-rust (there is no such thing as "rust free") coupe. Look for the best bodywork you can find - probably not in the midwest. Don't sweat the mileage or the motor/trans too much - both are relatively easy and comparatively inexpensive to rebuild or replace. I'd say keep looking. It's all about bodywork.
