Having done two bottom up restorations, I am of the opinion that no shop in the U.S. can do it all....really well (they burn out, bog down and charge $30 - 50K)Having said this, I think the best place for E9 drive train work (engine, trans, drive shaft balancing and differential rebuilding) is: John Gardiner Automotive in San Francisco (415-777-2697); best place for suspension rebuilding, original wheel recoating and bottom recoating is La Jolla (California) Independent BMW (Check info for the number and when you call ask for Carl); the best interior shop is TrimLine/European Upholstery - ask for Noel 310-539-4679. So yes, you gotta go all over California to get it done right but these guys do it right though it isn't cheap. A first class "redo" will cost about $25K -assuming the car is free of rust and in one piece. I beleive there is a shop somewhere near Chicago which specializes in BMW restorations. The gentleman who owns it was featured in Roundel with his restores 3200CS. I personally saw the car and it was beautiful. I believe he runs an ad in Roundel as well.
I have a guy local (NYC) who did a 3.0CS a few years back. He is not a specialist in E9 coupes, but a damn good restoration shop. Let me know if you would like the info.
Mike
