Sorry I don't have all the details handy, but the motors and the regulator that they mount on changed in 73 or 74.
I'm pretty sure that the E12/E28 motors conversion is to replace the later style E9 motors.
The early motors are pretty durable and will usually work a lot better if you take them out and clean and oil the bearings, gearboxes, and regulators.
