Are CARFAX report's impossible for 7 digit VIN's? (archive)

Gents, I'm new to the E9 board, but I do frequent the e28 M5 board.

So, to make a long story short, I've come across a '70 2800 CS. It needs a lot of work. Like a complete tear-down and resurrection. If I do hang on to the car and make it my new project, I'll be spending more time with you all.

The question: Has anyone done a Carfax search on cars with 7 digit numbers? On-line, Carfax says that a VIN has to have 17 characters. Is there a way to extrapolate 17 characters from the registration?
