1981 is the oldest year for which CARFAX has records.

Extrapolation won't work because BMW recycled some of the '73 and previous VINs for later cars. On the HTK, the VIN of my former '73 CS comes up as an E30 318is. '74 and beyond will work in the HTK, though.
