I'm bored right now so I'm going to write a bunch of stuff that hopefully clears it up somewhat for you. Than I'm goign to sleep. yeah.

The 'CS cars' you're likeley thinkign are the E9 body style. These are the 2800CS and 3.0CS. Actually also the 3.0CSi, the 3.0CSL, and the 2.5CS. Anyway...

The 2800CS replaced the weird-looking 2000CS (that has a 2.0L four, the 2002 motor...) in 1968. it featured a new front like the E3 (bavaria) has and looks really nice. It used the 2.8L "M30" inline six with 192hp or so. Dual Zenith dowfdrafts. Retained the rear drum brakes. The body is made by Karman -- it's really pretty. Really prone to rust. The car cost insane amounts of money -- more than a Porsche 911, Mercedes SL, Jaguar E-type, etc.

The 3.0CS replaced that car in '71 and it looks almost exactly like a 2800CS. It's a 3.0L M30 motor this time. Disk brakes all around. Then the 200hp euro-only CSi (fuel injected model) came out. There are a bunch int he 'states.
The CSL is a lightweight CS and CSi, extremely rare and expensive. It's a race car special.

CS's are practical cars, very nice to drive. yes, they are porty, but very refined, comfortable, elegant, etc. Chicks dig them. They are fast (it's all relative though). They cost a lot of money and there were very few produced. Due to rust problems and the like, there are not many left. You can pick a good-to-nice one up anywhere from 8-18k or so (that's my guess at a range). Parts avaliability is ok in some areas and tough in others. The last year was 1975 (in Europe) and 1974 in the USA.

Problems? Rust. Cracked heads on the pre-81 heads if you overheat it or abuse it. otherwise, mechanically identical to a Bavaria and similar to other early M30 cars. The "big six" inline six is the best BMW motor ever made, in my opinion.

So... you gonna buy one? : )

Here's my quick timeline write-up on my site:
