You'd be looking for the best-condition-body you can afford, regardless of whether it has EFI, what color it is, etc. Otherwise, you'll likely regret it. If you look long enough and see as many cars as possible, you'll probably find something that you wanted. I wouldn't just buy one on ebay and see what happens in other words, but that may work too, I don't know.

The CSi's (1972 and up) were never sold here. They are all grey market Euro cars and are harder to find. There's nothing wrong with the carburetor models, and those can be easily modified.

I'm not sure that a 3.0CS is "faster" than a 325i but I can attest to the fact that it's kind of faster than a "e" motor one or a 318.

I don't know if we buy them for the performance, probably we just like the overall driving and owning experience. The suspension is nice, it handles fine and it has power steering which isn't as boosted as modern PS is, and I like it that way. The brakes are pretty good. I have a ton more fun driving it than my sister's '96 318ti at least. I have the stock 4-speed stick.

As a performance thing, you'd probably be better off buying a newer "big six" like a 535i or something - then you get a fast car with cheap parts and no rust problems, fewer miles (maybe) etc.
