My guess is that the tailpipe serves to get the sound out from under the car. Also, it will play a very SLIGHT role in muffling the sound.

I was changing the exhaust hanger for the tailpipe a few days ago. When the tailpipe is off, the car roars! Why? Just that small pipe muffles all the sound? Don't believe me? try it yourself. Maybe the sound resonates in the tire...I dunno, it is a really weird deal. Anybody know why the tailpipe plays a crucial role in silencing the rumble?
