Well, it is a juggling act, but I did it a few weeks ago on my 6 (same housing, same gasket) using Permatex, so that proves anyone can do it.

Let's make sure you have the proper parts. The O ring is 11 53 1 250 399, if you choose to also use the flat gasket, it's 11 53 1 250 357 and the 80 deg thermostat is 11 53 1 254 065.

The later parts sources don't list the flat gasket anymore and show that the O ring goes in front of the thermostat instead of behind when using the flat gasket. However, if the thermostat doesn't fit into the groove so that the O ring can sit on top, that would be a problem.

It looks like your parts supplier is taking liberty with list prices. BMW lists the thermostat at $26.25. They're available for much less than that from places like BMA and alloembmwparts.com. The one I got from BMA was $10 and is OEM. Circle BMW is a good source for up to date list prices,www.circlebmw.com/parts/price.htm. Hendrick BMW in Charlotte, NC has probably the cheapest prices on the Mobile Tradition parts CD, 800 476-8322. They give a BMWCCA member discount so you need to be a member. Well worth it, particularly when Klaus Schnizter has pictures of coupes in the Roundel.
