Problem may be with the t'stat housing (archive)

try sanding it flat. put a piece of wet-or-dry sandpaper on a flat surface, like a piece of glass and sand the gasket surface til you get an even looking finish all across it.
Also look at the other mating surface on the timing cover and make sure it is clean too.
