I once had a cable that was broken in the middle, but would still "turn" the other end if one casually checked it. The pieces at the break were ragged enough that they would make some connection, but not enough to drive the speedo.

Also, check that the "square" end of the cable isn't worn "round". I've seen that too.

I've never heard of one of the gearboxes going and would think that they are considerably stronger than the cable.
