I too have longed for one of these beauties and just recently took the plunge. My advice - get the best car you can afford (i.e. stay away from the "total project" as you will likely spend more than it is worth and you you'll have to wait quite a while before you can really enjoy it.) I would check out the CSi on ebay recently imported, it sounds like it may be a good one...
Good Luck!

I have about 14k to spend on this project but I also want to be able to drive the car I buy. I have a fairly reliable second car. What I can't afford is to drop another 2k here and 1k there. I have checked out a good local mechanic for german cars who said the 3.0 was 'problematic'. The one in CA sounds good. Has anyone out there seen it or know the seller? What do you think the car as described will go for? I will have to provide transportation because I live in the middle of the country. This would be a big leap for me as I am a novice about all of this. Thanks for your comments
