Puzzle--my '74 3.0CS always runs way too rich.. (archive)

My 1974 3.0cs runs too rich and I am at my wits end trying to figure out what is wrong with it. The best idle is achieved with black smoke pouring out the exhaust (3 turns out on my webbers). When I lean them down to where they are burning sort of clean the poor thing hardly runs at all (the idle has dropped ~300 RPM).

Other symptoms include:

The engine occasionally dips while running. Something like Brrrrrrrrrrupbrrrrrrrrrrrrrup.......

I have replaced the diaphragms in the carbs, check the idle mixture screws for damage, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the coil, points, condenser, plugs, wires, and checked the valves.

The EGR valve doesn't work, but the poor thing runs worse when it is disconnected.

The timing and dwell are adjusted correctly and the carbs are pretty well balanced.

Thank you for your help,

Trent

Note when I hook up my timing light, it says to check the connections (it has a hard time sensing the spark). I don't know whether this means anything...
