The dash wood is not separate from the tray. That chrome strip you see above the wood is screwed in from the top to the wood and it is also screwed into dash frame. The wood is also screwed in from the bottom to the tray. So, in order to get the wood out, the dash top with the instrument shroud, instrument panel, heater controls fascia has to be removed. Not too difficult, but you have to reach and remove a few screws and nuts from underneath. You also have to remove the defrost vents from bottom (or at least loosen it from the dash pad).
