OK, paint issues are cleared up. Now that I am driving this recently purchased '74, the fan motor runs even when switched to the "off" position. Kind of naive, but the a/c was running when I test drove it, so I was not aware of this situation. Saw some archived messages about installing a switch-on & off valve in one of the heater hoses. I am such a babe in the woods with this car, so excuse the question if everyone knows the answer.

The heater core is always hot by design. The air flow is supposed to be directed throught the "fresh air" vents when the heat is off. The flaps that controll this air flow are sealed with rubber foam strips at their edges to create a seal. With time the foam seals dry and turn to powder. The heater box can be removed and new rubber/foam seals placed (homedepot hvac dept). Or put in a vlave switch to bypass the hot water from the heater core durring the summer mos..good luck...Carl Westcott
