For 30 year old cars, they are pretty reliable. You do have to figure on doing maintenance more often than with today's cars. Figure on minor service (oil change, etc.) every 4000 and major service (tuneup, fluid changes, etc.) every 8000.

People did drive these cars like real cars when they were newer.

One definite problem as they age is in the area of poor electrical contacts. Well, maybe not so new - I can remember learning early in BMW ownership that the first thing to do when something electrical didn't work was to rotate the fuse involved! Still works sometimes.
