I had my previous '73 CS for 18 years and I don't think I darkened the doorstep of a shop for tuneups more than the fingers on one hand in over 100,000 miles. That was in my "I had to work on cars in a gas station to get through college and I'm tired of it" stage, so I didn't DYI. And it ran great.

If you don't want to worry about points and condensers, you can install a Pertronix electronic ignition.
