Thumbing thru the repair manual, on my way to something else, I noticed a page (11 22 54) devoted to "starter gear ring renewing." According to the manual, the ring can be separated from the flywheel by drilling a hole in it, sorting out the teeth and heating it back into place. From your description it sounded like yours was pretty far gone, though.

Anyway, I checked the parts manual and the starter gear doesn't show up as a seperate item from the flywheel, which doesn't neccessarily mean it doesn't exist. If I wuz in your shoes I'd give Maximillian or Carl Nelson's shop a ring on this one. Could be cheaper than a whole flywheel, though the labor will still be an issue...
