This is good and bad: he tells me the clutch is pretty warn, as noted from its stiffness, so I'm in for a new 3-piece clutch kit.
He notes that either the front brakes are warped or there's severe front end looseness -- it's the recent front disks, dammit, that are warped IMHO.
But the trans checks out pretty good, and he'll do the swap on my car in exchange for the 4-speed that comes out.
I got the 4-speed five or so years ago from a wrecked '79 528i with about 80kmiles on it. I don't drive much, just to and from work, about 12 miles/day, and commonly have another car for longer trips. On Oahu, a long trip is to the North Shore and back, about 95 miles, so the trans has maybe 100k on it.
Now I gotta get out the auto driveshaft, which will stretch the needed 3/4 inch, and I think I left the auto trans speedo cable in, so that's no problem. The trans crossmember came with the 5-speed (as did the rest of the car, now gone, what a hideous rustbucket). I did a major scrub on the bell housing last weekend, so it's nice and shiny; the trans I cleaned some months ago.
Watch for a new 5-speed coupe in Honolulu.
