I'm putting together a shifer for my 265 and I'm wondering what the best amount of throw reduction would be. The stock E12 265 shifter has a ball-to-pivot distance of 26mm. I have the lower shifters from both a 2002 and a 320i. The 320i has a distance of 33mm and the 2002 is 39mm.Although the relationship is not linear, it is close. If you do the math, the throw reduction using the 320i shifter is 27% and using the 2002 part is exactly 50%.
What are people using (numerically)? I'm worried that a 50% reduction will increase the shift effort too much. I've been told that the 265 has to move more metal than the 262 or 260. Anyone have real-world experience here?
