Thanks, Charlie, but first a question: Is the pump in the water reservoir? I have nothing in my water reservoir--what looks like a cylindrical cartridge is below the water reservoir, with lines leading into and out of it.

this is a simple one, you'll get some satisfaction from doing it.

The washer pump is an electric motor, with two small brass gears in a housing. The end plate of the pump is steel, the gears (impellers) are brass, they're in water, so of course they corrode and stick together.

Remove the pump, use a real small socket to take the bottom plate off, sandpaper or wire brush wheel on the bottom plate till it's nice and smooth, a little lube on the motor if you fell like it. Reassemble, test, off you go.

I have about five of these pumps, I got a wild hair one morning and did all in about 2 hours.

All the older bimmers use the same pump; but my '83 533i had a different one with a nozzle that stuck into the reservoir. A big step down, since it could leak there (and was also stuck in the usual way).

"While you're at it" you should make sure your plastic lines are free of mud, algae, etc., and use a fine wire (from your wire brush) to make sure the nozzles are clear. If you use that blue washer additive it can crust up on the nozzles and stop them.
