As far as I know they are exactly the same. The S38 was derived from the earlier m88. My pal had an m88 race engine (ex m1 procar) in and e9 CSL(horn lookin donk).
He bolted up a 262 to it. I have a 3.6(in an e28)and 3.8 s38 (to go in an e30 m3). Both engines have the same bell housing bolt pattern.
