Backfiring through the carbs is a sign that either your timing is too advanced or the mixture is too lean.

Best way to set timing is to start with static timing. Set the flywheel at TDC, turn on the ignition (but do not start) and connect a continuity tester to the wire between the diz and coil. Loosen and rotate the diz to the point where the continuity tester light just comes on/off. Tighten the diz clamp, you've set timing to TDC at which point the engine should start and run okay.

Advance be ear until it pings under load, then back off a little. Good to go.
