30 minutes sounds right. You just need to get under the car to disconnect the lever (the part you are changing) from the linkage. As for warranty voiding, my question is what warranty are you talking about? BTW this is the same shifter RMS sells for $500.
And in regards to its performance, I can honestly say I did not measure the shortness, but it is about 3" throw between 1st and 2nd (or 3rd and 4th"), and is comprabable to a miata's. To get the full effect of the shifter, you should swap out the BMW knob with a smaller one. I put in MOMO's aluminum knob(part# ALUCO), it shortened the throw a little bit more just because the lever arm was shortened.
If you do change the knob, but the leather boot sags, get an o-ring, and have it hold the top hidden part of the boot up, so that you can change where the boot meets the knob. Hope that's clear.
Finally, the part number is easily brought up at your BMW service guy. Good Luck,
