A Baffling Question (archive)

The owner of a local BMW shop was telling me that if I plan to autocross my 97 M3 to any great extent, I should install an oil pan baffle to prevent starvation. And it just so happens that they make such a baffle and can install it for me.
I have seen the Motorsport pans and aftermarket baffle systems. My question is, is this a common problem with these cars? I see how it could be if I had slicks and such but what about DOT tires and stock or slightly tuned suspension.
I certainly don't mind spending the money if it is a necessary and effective mod.
