I always depress the clutch pedal before starting the engine. This way I detach the crankshaft from the gearbox. I want my starter motor to do as little work as possible - why asking it to rotate not only the crankshaft, but also half of the gearbox (assuming it is in the idle position, of course).
Besides, everyone can make a mistake and one day I might try to start the engine while in gear.
From what you say, starting the engine without depressing the clutch is some kind of fun or a cool thing - I miss this point. (No offense intended, I just don't feel it.)
