Since the things that dictate how well "connected" a car feels to the road -- things like wheels/tires, suspension geometry, bushings, shock/spring rates, and steering -- are BMW M's bread and butter (beyond tuning motors), I have faith that they will be able to turn the E46 into a chassis worthy of an M badge.
I vaguely recall one of the reasons for the wait was that the E46 M3's motor is being developed in tandem with the new inline six family that will appear in the 3 and 5 series in late 2000 or 2001. Any truth to this rumor? Anyone have specs on these motors? I remember reading (Car And Driver, maybe?) that the 2.8L in the 328i/528i/Z3 2.8 was slated to be replaced with a 3.0L from the new engine family. If that's true, I wouldn't be surprised to see something along the lines of a 3.5 or 3.6L in an E46 M3. Slobber, drool.
