You won't hurt your battery if you just go ahead and use the car's cigarette lighter socket. The air compressors sold at the parts store work just fine for routine tire inflating purposes. I usually carry around a portable battery jumper, which not only works well for emergency purposes but you can also use it for powering your air compressor, cell phone, for camping, etc.
