No it's not in the manual.
Press both the 1000 and 100 to access the function list. Use the 10 and 1 buttons until you have 41 (if I remember correctly). Press set/res. The display will show the speed. You can remove the display by pressing the check button or temp. button

It only works for the non-OBC cars (i.e. just check control). It worked on my 98 M, but not on my buddy's 98 w/OBC.

You can also set the language and a few other things (which I don't say you should mess around with!) by trying different values
