: : I found a service bulletin that describe about tappet noise after cold engine start up. The service bulletin number is 11 05 90 (3058). I tried to do the check on the hydraulic tappets like what the bulletin say and YES my car tappets has failed to self adjust. So I called BMW NA and explained them and they made appointment for me to drop my car to the nearest dealer. However the dealer checked on it and said "there is nothing wrong with your car, sir". So I called BMW NA again and insist them to help me. However they only said that they trust the BMW dealer 'cause all the technicians graduate from BMW and have all the knowledge about BMW. But it is so obvious that my tappet is not working. So I need to know if any of you guys have or had any experience with the ticking noise on their e36-m3 and would like to share with me how do you deal with the dealer to have them fix. Thank You in advance for the input.
: Fortunately, I don't get the noise at cold starts but I do get it at auto-X with the oil starvation. I notice this when I get an oil change at my dealership. They tend to put only a certain amount of oil in the car. I have always added an extra quart when I get home. If you have lost power in your car, then I'd worry. If not, just add a quart and always check your levels bi-weekly.
Yes I did put an extra oil so that the oil level is a little bit higher than the max. However this does not help at all. Since only the tappets are not working, I do not fell any loss of power (like what the bulletin say). Anyway, thanks for the info.
