I know it sounds a little silly, but I've found that changing oil brands might help. In my experience, I get more valve/lifter noise from Valvoline than I do from Castrol GTX or Havoline. I don't know why and don't want to get into a snake oil discussion here, but for whatever reason, the Castrol seems to make the valve train run quieter. Cheap advice you might want to try.
Also (and here's some bad advice), if you have hydraulic lifters, they're really sensitive to little specks of dirt in the oil holes. Put about 1/2 qt. of Dextron III A/T fluid in with 4 qts of oil for up to 200 mi., no hard driving. The strong detergent and slight abrasive qualities of the A/T fluid cleans out the oil passages and will quiet down the noisest of engines. BTW, this method is reserved for the point in time *right* before you sell the 'ol 1983 chevy chevette. Learned this trick from a "bare light bulb" used car salesman. I've done it. It works. It'll purrr like a kitten.
