First of all 235/40 18 isn't the width, it's the tire size. Out of the two sizes that you mentioned, I'd go with the 235/40's over the 245/40 since it's closer to the OEM tire size.
The difference is so small though you could probably go with either.

If you really want 245's (if they'll fit) you should probably go with a 35 series although if you do you'll want to avoid every pot hole in your path.

The thing to remember is that the first number in the size is the width in mm. Divide by 25.4 to get inches.

235 = 9.25"
245 = 9.65"

Either one will fit on 8.5" wide rims.
