Well, I finally got my ECIS Intake kit after organizing the group purchase for the last two weeks. Arrived today with the K&N Cone, custom heat shield, some mounting brackets, and bolts and stuff. Oh, and installation sheet with some colored pictures.
The instructions were very clear. It took me a short while to figure out the names of the different parts that were associated with the installation. Once I got it, I took the airbox out and airduct and followed the instructions on putting the intake kit in. Took me about 1.5 hours. I didn't know the air temperature sensor were the two hose like things at the bottom of the airbox, so I put the airbox back in, and drove back to make a phone call to ECIS. But, before they could get back to me, I knew that was the air temp sensor so I went back out to do the install again. That's what cost me about 25 minutes or so in the 1.5 hour time that I spent on installation.
The quality of the cone bracket, custom heat shield, and mouting equipment are all very high. The shield and the cone bracket are made really well, and looks very professional.
I think I'm saying too much, so on to the test drive. Immediately, the induction noise is very appearant. After some acceleration runs, I noticed that the induction noise is loudest between 2k rpm and 3.5k rpm. Below 2k rpm is the mean deep throaty growl of my ES Tuning exhaust. Above 3.5k rpm is the roar of my exhaust taking over. I can best describe the induction noise like a rattle snake living inside the engine. It's a kind of scream-roar that sounds like a rapid "dah dah dah dah dah dah..." It's really hard to explian, but you'll understand it once you get a free flowing intake. It sounds mean. Before the kit, the engine sounds like it's breathing thru a thick layer of cloths. With the intake kit, it sounds like the engine is set free to scream and sing. The inline-6 does sound magistic. After a short drive, I pulled over and opened the hood. The air on the engine side of the heat shield is significantly warmer than the side where the intake cone is. There is a little bit of gain in hp between 2k-3.5k as I felt it in the seats. But, don't expect a 200hp gain. When you step on the gas pedal, the engine seems to be working easier to rev from 1k to past 4k.
