I've had my 98 M3 for about one month now.. and I love it. I was reading a past review of the M3 on the car and driver web site and they made a comment about the car that I hadn't really thought about before but now that I've read about it, it has been bothering me a little. They made the comment that the M3 revs too high on highway driving. At 80 the car is reving at 3500-3600 RPM. Now I know that I still lots of room to get to 7000RPM, but wouldn't the fuel economy be that much better if at 80 the M3 was doing about 3000RPM? I love the sound of the M3's engine (pure music), but at a lower RPM it would also be quieter for the times when I want silence or my music). Has anyone ever tried to get a 6-Speed manual in the e36 M3? I know some of the 5-series has them and I believe that the new M3s will have them. I'd just really like to see a 6th gear in my car.
Also.. I was on my way to play some football with some friends coming from Marlboro, MA to Worcester, MA on 290 this Sat morning. I was toying with my friend who has a GMC Typhoon (fast off the line.. but that's it). He would fall back and punch his car.... I'd wait until he got next to me and I'd put it in 4th gear and match his speed and pull away. Simple fun. Closing in on Worcester is a long, decently steep uphill.. and I'm just crusing up it at 75 when in my rear view mirror I see a white M3 cut my friend off and get right behind me. I took off and he with me.. and going up this hill we got up to around 110 before running into traffic. Looking behind me I THOUGHT that I was pulling from him (I'm just about stock with the exception of an HKS Klasse exhaust.... it came with the car). Maybe he was just keeping a safe distance? I pulled in the middle and he pulled next to me and we smiled and waved. Was that anyone here? The funniest part was when I got to my destination and my friend in the Typhoon was sooo pissed that he couldn't keep up with the M3s. HAHA..
