Odometer uses front or rear wheels? (archive)

I would like to know if the odometer is measuring the
travel of the front or rear wheels.

If it is the front, then I would assume it is fine to
change the tires in the rear and not have a mileage
inaccuracy. I would like to put 235/40s in back
instead of the 245/40s.

Is this why the snow tire recommendation is for 225/45
all around, since the front tires need to be 225/45-17"
on 98 M3s?
