Most probably it is your O2 sensor. These are the exact symtoms of this.

To check it-

Turn ignition key on full (but not start).
Press gas pedal 5 times fully within 5 seconds.
The check engine light will come on for 5 seconds, then 2.5 seconds.

Then, see if it blinks once, then twice, then twice, then once, followed by a pause (no blinks) and then repeat of the same pattern.

This 1221 code means O2 sensor fault.

BMW was nice enough to include this full self diagnostic in OBDI cars. It can tell you all your fault codes. Pick up a copy of Bently's service manual.
