wheel ratings? (archive)

While looking for a new set of wheels, I have been trying to evaluate what's on the market by more than their appearance. However, I've been discouraged by how hard it is to find out how much a wheel weighs, my assumption being, holding everything else equal, that a lighter wheel is better. Likewise, I can't find any ratings for other aspects of a wheel, such as torsional rigidity, shear factor, and so on. Is this hopeless or is there some way to evaluate the technical performance of wheels?

More specifically, is there anyone out there who has been racing BMW's and knows which wheels provide the best trade-off between lightness and durability?
