: race with a stock looking "sleeper" car. there is nothing like the feeling when you are in staging lines against some modified hot rod and then they do a bigtime burnout & pull up to the lights. you you skipped the burn out and went right to staging, then when the tree comes down, you blow their doors off!! that gets my adrenalin pumping. there weren't a lot of cars last night, but i ran a supra TT (stock) and smoked it every time, i ran a newer camaro and smoked it, and older camaro and smoked it,ran a ram air firebird and smoked it, several mustangs and a neon. yes i had to mention the neon,,, he ran a 15.8 against my 12.7. as a matter of fact, i didnt get outrun by any car that i raced last night, and the only street car that was faster was a trailer'd viper gts with nitrous, slicks, headers and other mods(oops, i had said street cars) he ran a high 10 on the bottle.
: i do plan on getting into autocrossing and road racing, but i dont have the knowledge yet and at $15 a night, drag racing is easily accessible and fun.

: : Fun: Have you ever been to a drag strip? If you have, then you know it's a blast. Each run becomes more of a contest against yourself than anything else. Every time you get a good run, or a good launch, or whatever, you immediately want to go back and try again, to do better. It's not about trying to show that you're the faster bugger around, but a chance to test your driving skill. Driving down a 1/4 mile takes different skills than driving around a track, but it's NOT easy to do well. It takes practice - learning to launch your car and drive it in a straight line to the best of your ability is a great challenge. It *is* real racing - don't fall into the trap of thinking it's easy because there aren't any turns.
: : LOL, most avid road racers I know end up running *horrid* times their first few tries at the dragstrip, then end up getting totally hooked and keep coming back. And vice-versa, of course.
: : Tuning: There are two relatively consistent ways to track what effects modifications and tuning has on your vehicle, the dyno and the drag strip. Strapping a car to a dyno is fun, but it's often very expensive ($50/hr or more) for more "ooooh look" pleasure than anything else. Running at the track on an open test and tune night is cheap (often $20 for unlimited runs), fun, and when driven consistently effectively shows power and other gains (case in point: Tommy felt his car shifted smoother with redline, and *proved* it at the track by lowering his ET).
