When this was discussed a while ago on the Roadster Message Board, it was assumed that the Roadster had more German built parts than the regular Z3s and therefore qualified for the 'W' code.

This shouldn't be news to the NHTSA, there are 2+ model years of M Roadsters out there with the suspicious 'W' designator.
