: Collective:

: Had my M3 for about 3 months now. Was traffic racing a Carrera Last night and came home.

: Got some valve clatter.

: Proceeded to check the oil. Hmmmmm...a little low.

: Wound up filling it with 2.25 quarts of Castrol-Synthetic. (Yes, I'll switch to Redline when it comes time to do the full oil change)

: Since I assume the dealer did the last oil change and might not have compensated for the filter or used like a 5-30 oil, how much oil does the M3 use between changes?

: Don't say none as my Dad's Boxster has used close to 4 quarts of oil between it's 24k mile oil changes.

: Thanks!

M3 oil consumption is a funny thing...Most people have some...the rule seems to be about 1 qt per 1k - 2k miles. This often disappears after 10K miles....It seems very important not to switch to synthetic too soon..How soon is too soon? If there is any consensus at all, I'd wait till at least 10K miles with dino oil before the switch...You're at 3 mos? What's that, 3000 miles or so? Get that castrol syntec outta there, and replace it with the conventional BMW 15W-40, and keep it in til your first scheduled oil change...You will use some during the first 10K miles, so only top up with conventional of a similar weight....If the rings have seated by your first scheduled oil srvc, then its ok to have them change your oil to synthetic....If not, keep using dino for another 5K miles...If it still hasnt stopped by then, it probably never will, but at least you will have given it the ol' college try...
