Depends. My 98 M3 uses about 1 quart every 2000-3000 miles now (it used to be worse). Some people report very little/no consumption.

Basically, you have to get in the habit of checking often - every gas fill-up, or every week, whatever works for you.

FWIW, I'm using the BMW 5W40 synth and have considered switching to Red Line 10W40 to see if that will reduce the consunption a bit. But I'm changing theoil on Thurs, and will probably stick with the 5W40 for the time being.
