It would be nice to have a car which allows the same thing if it should happen, but that's not the case. If it really bothers you that much, maybe you should look into either a holinger six-speed sequential gearbox, a steptronic, or some other car which allows for careless shifting. I don't want to start a flame war here, but it all depends on the driver, not the car. If you over-rev your car, it's your own fault, not BMW's. If I happen to over-rev my car the only person to blame is myself and the money is coming out of my pocket and not from my warranty. Good luck, and may our lives be filled with clean, crisp shifts.

You're missing the point, all the US-cars have fine standard transmissions and the driver can't get the lever into 1st or 2nd at high road speeds without alot of force. The same with many European race cars, because of the extreme expense with a past history of shredded engines. My reasoning is why does BMW allow this problem in the 1st place??? Imagine driving the new M5 in a traffic-panic situation....one very small shift-error at high speed, and boom you've destroyed a real fine engine...there is no reason for this nonsense crap. It's like having less than average brakes on the car, and BMW fixed that by making the best brakes on the M3, they can do the same thing with the forbidden tranny high- road-speed downshift.
