40lbs in sound material in trunk? (archive)

I figure sound deadening material would be in the cabin where the driver is. What does the material in the trunk do? Is is there to help keep exhaust noise out or???


: Carbon fibre hood = 40 lbs.Fibreglass ~25 lbs. Replace front seats w/ Sparco etc. can save ~110lbs if you build own alum brackets. Rear seats(mainly folding seatback)=30lbs. Replace castiron manifold w/ stainless steel 96 up headers = 10lbs + cat back stainless steel exhaust = 25lbs. Swap battery for gel motorcycle battery = 25lbs. Change to motorsport rotors w/ alum hats = 8lbs.Remove sound deadening mtl in trunk =40 lbs.Total = `225lbs. Done it - 97 M3 goes like stink but you have to be masochist to drive long distance on street!!
