I agree with your points. They are valid.
But here's my final counterpoint and the source of my exasperation.
Let's say today, on the market is this item:
BMW-ECU Reprogram Software
Comes with Software on CD and Serial cable for your PC
Program the ECU yourself or choose one of our
preset settings for various engine configurations.
This software comes to you door in a box.
The screen has a menu that allows to you see the stock settings and change them along the rpm curve. Setting you see are timing, fuel maps, etc.
You can even drive with the unit plugged in to log performance.
Assuming you might be timid about playing with settings so you choose a default: STOCK US SPEC. 91+ FUEL.
You pick up 10+hp and 10+ ft/torq.
You buy an intake upgrade down the road.
Plug in the PC again and choose: STOCK US SPEC +91 FUEL/INTAKE UPGRADE.
And so on.
Please keep in mind, what Dinan, Turner and whoever sells is decent stuff. But even JimC had to break down and create the very software you probably use.
And now that same software is actually being sold for use by consumers.
