The water pump can go on these, because on the early model-year cars, they used a plastic impeller (sp?). Later in the year, I believe they started using metal impellers which solved the problem. They tend to go at about 60k miles.
I had a '95 325i that lost the water pump; just bought a '95 M3 and I'm having the water pump replaced as a preventive measure. You can get stranded if it goes while you're on the road.
