If you don't think its worth it, don't get it. I believe the biggest advantage of UUC is that their shifters will last forever. The bushings they use are much better than AAs. The ball position for the shifter is corrected for in the UUC unit, but I don't believe it is for the AA unit.
I had a Korman adjustable unit and used it for a few months without any problems, including a few autoxes and crazy weekend driving :). I switch to AC shnitzer because I managed to purchase a used unit. I probably would have eventually purchased a UUC for my M3 had I not gotten the ACS unit. I actually decided to purchase two of them (one for my 325 and one for my friends 323) but they got lost in shipping and that' another story.
Anyway, the bottom line is, the UUC is the best shifter in terms of quality, fit and finish on the lower side of 500 dollars. It is pricey-ish, but then again, so is your car :). A few others will do the job well, but they wont last as long and feel as tight.
